Stephanie York was born in 1980 and currently lives in Phoenix Arizona with her husband and young son. She has created and practiced art in many forms most of her life and has most recently studied fine art at the University of Cincinnati in the DAAP school BFA program. Her art has been showcased in many different venues some of which include galleries, museums, art fairs, and public spaces. Her paintings are currently being represented by a leading commercial gallery in Washington DC, Gallery A of Alex Gallery. Her current and ongoing collection of paintings are an abstracted exploration of the human experience and the relationship it has with her personal reality. The twists, turns, tunnels, paths and creatures visible in her work are all attempts to evaluate the endless possibilities of everyday experience, moments, fractions of time, each individual and apparent implication and their relationship and connection to each other. These works are created using primarily acrylic paint, watercolor, sumi Japanese ink, a calligraphy pen on canvas, paper or hardboard.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I've been connected to the arts my whole life and in many forms. The first time I recall consciously being excited and driven to create I was in elementary school and I knew I was an artist. I went to a school for the arts as a youngster and continued at art school furthering my education as a young adult studying fine art with an emphasis in photography. After a period in my life of working and going to school full time I decided to step away and start a body of work that truly inspired me, that conveyed artistic freedom on my own terms. I wanted to find a way to naturally express without pretext or definition. While figuring out where to begin I remembered as a kid how I loved to sit and doodle without a care in the world. What wonderful worlds I would get lost in. Each stroke of my pen would push me further and further into what I felt was a magical place. The innocence of that memory, turned idea, the thought of a child with no real agenda except to be content, connected and happy in her world is what inspired me to create my newest body of work in that vain. I began by focusing on the seemingly subconscious within myself and translating that into my work, remembering those entwining childhood environments they surfaced as paths to my psyche. These twists, turns, tunnels, paths and creatures are reflections of everyday experiences and moments that lead to my interpretation of the connection between mind, body, spirit and our world at large. I enjoy focusing on these possible connections within myself and translating that into my work and feel that in doing so I reveal a truth that may have had no other way of escape.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PAINTING PROCESS
I start a painting usually by dripping washing or coating the surface with acrylic paint or watercolor allowing the colors to run and meld into each other by tipping the canvas or hardboard in multiple directions. After building up many layers of color I begin the process of laying bold black ink strokes. In most cases I have no real composition in mind I just let it flow. After I lay down the basic shapes within the painting I fine tune them with a calligraphy pen and also use that tool to accentuate and create details giving the paintings depth. After that I usually fill in spaces with additional color to ballance the piece. I found later through showing my artwork that almost as much as I enjoyed creating the work I absolutely loved the things that people were able to see in them, the worlds that people were able to create. Its as if my paintings come full circle. I start and finish with the intent to blissfully enjoy. In the end the works create environments that present different scenarios to each person which in turn gives way to the true nature of the pieces, the reason they were created in the first place. Creating is my passion in any form really; just having the opportunity to come up with something that encapsulates individualized expression is really thrilling. I primarily use acrylic paint, Japanese sumi ink on canvas, watercolor paper or hard board.
